Squadron’s Annual Review
In front of an audience of parents, friends and invited guests and dignitaries, the cadets of 1921 Squadron reviewed 2009 in a belated Annual Review ceremony. Originally slated for the end of the year, the wintry weather forced a postponement of the Review, and it finally took place in March 2010. We were delighted to be joined by a range of old friends, including Colonel Jane Davis TD, Lewisham’s Deputy Lord Lieutenant, Cllr Sylvia Scott and Cllr Heidi Alexander of Lewisham Council, and Sqn Ldr Caroline Gourri, of Region staff and former Officer Commanding. We were also honoured by the attendance of Captain Tony Poulter RN and his wife, the Master of the Worshipful Company of Fletchers (Arrow-Makers). We hope this marks the beginning of a strong association between the Squadron and the Worshipful Company, as the only London unit to conduct archery training, and one of the City’s honoured Livery Companies.
A series of individual achievements, including Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award certificates and a range of classification badges and awards, accompanied the presentation of the Squadron’s four main awards. Cdt Phillip Blake marked a superb career with the Squadron by scooping the award for Best Attendee, while Cdt Luke Chapman marked a great start by being named the Squadron’s Best Recruit for 2009. Finally, the highest possible standards underpinned the awards for both Best Cadet, and Best NCO. Our congratulations to both Cadet Ashley Messenger, for an incredibly mature and promising year, and Corporal Zaky Hnana, for impressive leadership and personal development throughout 2009.
Our thanks to all who supported the evening, including the hard work of Capt. Barry Exley and Mr ‘Taff’ Evans of the TA Centre, without whom we could not have held such an enjoyable evening.
