Storms Clear For Take Off
In the early hours of Sunday 15th November 2009, five cadets rose even before the sun to make their way to Kenley WWII Airfield for a day of adventures in the sky!
The cadets embarked on an adrenaline filled day in the air, getting involved in all aspects of glider flying from preparing the aircraft for launching, to actually trying their hands at flying the Viking Gliders themselves, some for their first time! A huge deal for anybody, let alone for a group of teenagers barely old enough to drive a car!!
The lucky Cadets- namely FS Jen Nixon; Cpl Alice Wilcox; Cdt Charlie Ann Rees; Cdt Ashley Messenger and Cdt Charlie Turner- each had four launches, with the opportunity to take over the controls and fly the gliders singlehandedly once in the air. Just another day in the life for a 1921 Squadron Air Cadet!!
The cadets also had the unexpected pleasure of the presence of Officer Commanding London Wing, Wing Commander Silver who had recently been voted Inspirational Woman of the Year by the readers of The Daily Mail. She was appearing with a feature writer from the News of the World who was running a story on the activities of the Air Cadets for their newspaper. Not only did the Cadets learn to fly planes, they were also to feature in a top London newspaper! Not a bad day some would say!
I think it would be fair to assume that the day was an unforgettable one for all those who took part and that awesome fun was had by all! 1921 Squadron would also like to offer huge congratulations to those cadets that flew for their first time! A real achievement!
