Welcome to 1921

1921 Squadron is friendly and exciting Air Cadet Squadron, serving the Lewisham area. Our cadets take part in a range of activities and adventure training which are out of this world — where else could you learn to fly a plane before you can drive a car? Cadets aged 13 to 18 are regularly involved in flying, gliding, adventure training, shooting, sports and gaining qualifications with the Duke of Edinburgh's Award and BTEC courses. You could be too!

Taking Off With The Air Cadets

Cadets from 1921 (Lewisham) Squadron ATC took to the skies in different ways in March. Four cadets get gliding experience at RAF Kenley, while six others took to the skies in a powered aircraft over Oxfordshire.

After spending time over the winter learning about aviation, and how aircraft work, these flying opportunities were an excellent chance for the cadets to put the theory in to practice. Many of the budding pilots were flying for the first time, and found the experience to be different to their expectations:

“I knew that it would just be me and the pilot, but I did so much of the flying – it was great. It was amazing: we did loops and rolls, and flew upside down – I can’t wait to try again!”

“This is one of the best parts of being in the Air Cadets”, explained one of the staff. “As part of their training, cadets are given the opportunity to fly with qualified Royal Air Force flying instructors. They try to give cadets as much chance as they can to find out how the aircraft behaves – and it’s great to watch them putting it all in to practice and coming away with enormous smiles”.

The Air Cadet Organisation has been doing amazing things for young people since 1941, and celebrates its’ 70th birthday this year. Local squadrons, like 1921, are always recruiting.
